DC Comics are shortly to bring out a series of comics with a slightly different look and feel to their usual stuff. Their weekly Wednesday Comics will feature their familiar superheroes but printed on broadsheet size newsprint (and sold folded like a newspaper). Example page here.
I’ve no strong feelings about superheroes one way or another: I’ve certainly read enough superhero comics in the past to know they can be fun, colourful tales of adventure when done right but if taken too seriously all their absurdity comes very much into focus.
Although it’s been a long time since I read anything of the tights-and-capes genre I’ve found I’m quite curious about this new venture, partly because it sounds like they’re trying to put the fun back into the story-telling but mostly because the experimentally-minded small-presser in me is interested to see how the format looks. Somebody at BICS last year (I’ve forgotten who) had a comic printed on tabloid size newsprint and, although there’s a long term downside in using low quality paper, it looked and felt great. Innovative formats are something I try to keep in mind for conventions as they attract attention and are just nice things to get your hands on.
Anyway, I needed an excuse to draw superman and that was it!
